...I'm on a continuous quest to achieve fluency... so I've tried many products and self study programs. All of them have been boring or require a degree of discipline that I just can't manage. Your lessons are interesting and practical, they cover a variety of actual situations that I encounter... you just can't beat that. The commute in my car becomes a learning session, the computer games are much better than flashcards and the scoring appeals to those with a competitive nature....Quit looking and get learning! Rocket Japanese

Dear Japanese Learner, It is my pleasure to bring to you the first Asian language learning course from Rocket Languages... ROCKET JAPANESE!!! I am thrilled that I have been given the opportunity to create this course for you. I know what it's like getting discouraged by the experience of trying to learn a second language in school. It happened to me (when I had to learn English as a second language) and it's happened to most of us when we took a foreign language in school. Rocket Languages recognized years ago that there's a better and easier way to learn a second language, and that's why I am proud to be part of the team that is launching Rocket Japanese... If you've ever heard that children can pick up a new language faster and easier than adults, forget it. This is a common misconception. In fact, scientific research has proven that the most difficult learning task for children and adults alike may be the attempt to acquire second language proficiency in school environments. |
![]() |
In fact, even more distressing is that research has shown that less than 5 percent of students studying a foreign language are able to endure the stressful nature of formal school training to continue studying the language for more than two years (Asher, James. 1982. Principles and Practice in Second Language Acquisition. New York: Pergamon Press, 9-32).
What better motivation for us to design and create a language learning environment that allows regular people, like you, to speak Japanese confidently and naturally in less than 2 months!
• |
feel more comfortable and confident around Japanese speaking people |
• |
read books, magazines, and web sites written in Japanese |
• |
watch and understand Japanese movies |
• |
write to and email Japanese speaking people |
• |
or you simply want to become exceptional at Japanese for any other reason... |
Rocket Japanese will help you achieve your goals in a simple and easy way. The complete package contains 14 hours and 27 minutes of audio lessons in the Interactive Audio Course, 31 Grammar Lessons (which include comprehensive cultural notes and lessons on Japanese writing), and the hugely popular software based learning games, MegaJapanese (for vocabulary, pronunciation, and writing skills).
Want a preview of Rocket Japanese? Our FREE 6-Day Japanese Course gives you the first three of the 31 Interactive Audio tracks as well as plenty of grammar and exercises to keep you on the learning curve!

...Whether you just want simply to be able to converse or in addition to understand the grammar and learn more extensive vocabulary the options are there for you. One big benefit... is the enjoyment of all the lessons, we always look forward to the next one. In particular we find the interactive audio lessons very helpful with pronunciations... One important factor of the course is the pleasant voices... easy to listen to and understand. ...If you have any doubts about purchasing... try the free lessons first, as we did, and we are sure you will realise that here is a language course that you can adapt to your own way of learning and one that is fun in to the bargain. Joan Richards |

The Interactive Audio Course provides clear pronunciations and lessons which are easy to understand and follow. Moreover, there are wonderful learning games integrated with the program. |
I can carry on a basic conversation with the workers, I can meet someone new, I can ask them how they are, where they are from, I can shop at some of the local markets here, I can order in a restaurant, It is an excellent program, it is very simple it's very quick you can listen on your way to work, you can listen to it on your lunch hour, they are excellent, excellently constructed and they really give you a working knowledge of the language and I would highly recommend them to anyone else who is going on a trip... or just wants to be able communicate a little bit better. |
|
It has truly helped me out on my job and I plan on going through them again and probably go through it three or four times. ...I highly recommend it. Thank you. Joseph Seward |

The Rocket Japanese Interactive Audio Course is the hugely popular conversational learning component of your Japanese package.
These lessons place an immediate emphasis on SPOKEN Japanese. You get to hear conversations that are spoken in real everyday situations in modern Japanese society. Even better, they are designed so that you can get in on the action!! You'll learn to pronounce words and phrases by repeating them in context, and then work your way right up to speaking entire sentences on cue.
Participating in realistic Japanese conversations is clearly the best way to learn Japanese, and Rocket Japanese has succeeded in bringing you the next best thing to being in a room with two Japanese speakers...
We're offering you a way to learn Japanese that is not only comfortable, but also convenient... that's right, with all of our audio materials available in MP3 format, Rocket Languages has truly opened up the door on portable learning!!
Check out this sample from the Introduction of the Interactive Audio Course from Kenny and Sayaka:
|
Click on the play button to hear the audio. |
Along with each audio track you get the full transcript of the conversation in Japanese, followed by the translation in English. Here's the transcript for a basic conversation you hear for the very first lesson:
Kenny: |
Sayaka san, konnichiwa! |
Sayaka: |
Kenī san, konnichiwa! O genki desu ka? |
Kenny: |
Genki desu, arigatō, anata wa? |
Sayaka: |
Watashi mo genki desu, arigatō. |
Kenny: |
Hello, Sayaka! |
Sayaka: |
Hello, Kenny! How are you? |
Kenny: |
I’m good, thank you, and you? |
Sayaka: |
I’m good too, thank you. |
In addition to the conversations themselves, you get extra vocabulary and cultural tips, plus the super helpful Rocket Reviews that begin each new lesson!
The Interactive Audio Course is organized into a narrative that moves from very basic interactions (greetings and survival phrases) to more advanced exchanges (booking a room, talking about sports, dinner conversation).
The lessons also get more challenging in terms of grammar and vocabulary. For example, we'll teach you how to use the basic linking verb desu to build simple sentences, then move on to express continuing action (with te-form verbs), advance to the different types of adjectives (ii-type & na-type) and how and when to use them, and of course much more…
The course is divided in to 6 Parts according to topic and theme:
1) Greeting, Meeting, Food, and Drink
2) Travel
3) Nightlife
4) Arts and Culture
5) Family and Friends
6) Business Japanese
NOTE: Each of the 31 Interactive Audio Lessons comes with a ***corresponding Grammar and Culture lesson*** which allows you to explore the mechanics behind the spoken word. You can learn to speak Japanese without them, but these lessons - which include photos, illustrations, and embedded audio clips - will undoubtedly enhance AND expedite your learning!!
Track 1) Introduction & Greetings [14 min]
In this introductory lesson, Kenny and Sayaka take first things first. You learn how to greet someone and say hello at all different times of the day (it's important to use the right greeting at the right time in Japanese culture!). You'll also find out why, how, and when to use the expression "san" after a name, and you'll get a crash course on counting to boot! |
|
Track 2) Basic Introductions [28 min]
In this next lesson you find out how to ask how someone else is doing and reply in turn. You'll learn how to ask someone what their name is, where they are from, and some essential pleasantries by way of saying it was a pleasure to meet someone! In this lesson, you also find out about the honorific "O" in the Japanese language, the all-important linking verb (or "copula") desu, and we outline the four basic verb forms in Japanese. Japanese grammar is definitely … well, foreign when it comes to grammar compared to English. But it's easy if you take it in logical steps! |
|
Track 3) Tea Time [17 min] The first of our very refreshing lessons, "Tea Time" takes you to the counter to order a piping hot Japanese tea. But not so fast... you'll have to learn a few things about money and asking for what you want or need in Japanese first! |
|
Track 4) At the Sushi Bar [20 min] We got hungry by the fourth lesson and decided it was time to indulge in that most popular of Japanese foods: SUSHI! Where would we be without sushi? Anyway, in addition to raw fish, you'll come away from this lesson with the ability to say what you like and don't like, and you'll be able to use the common "Shall we" phrase to suggest an invitation to go do something, like: Shall we go and eat sushi tonight? (Konya o sushi tabe ni iki mashō ka). |
|
Track 5) Survival Phrases [30 min] Everybody needs survival phrases when they learn a new language, and we'll come to your rescue in this lesson with a few ways to manage a conversation that is going too fast, or might just be a little too advanced for you in the early days. Not only that, we'll leave you with a handy compliment that you can use to pay the utmost respect to your Japanese host, and get a smile out of them at the same time. This lesson is also your first encounter with the common way to express continuing action in Japanese (kind of like our verbs ending in -ing in English). |
Track 6) Getting Around Kyoto [24 min] In this lesson, we welcome you to your first experience with public transportation in Japan! But not to fear, you've got an excellent guide in Sayaka Matsuura, and she will show you how to get to Kyoto train station with all your limbs - and all your sanity - fully intact! You'll also find out how to say "excuse me" in Japanese, learn words for "this" and "that," and discover those strange but fundamental little words in Japanese grammar we call "particles." |
|
Track 7) The Perfect Tourist [23 min] In this lesson we get to relax in the role of tourist. Kenny gets a brochure from the tourist information desk and finds out that he can take photos wherever he likes. Even better, he figures out how to ask where a bathroom is before it's too late! In the process, you find out how to offer things and how to ask permission and stay on the right side of Japanese cultural etiquette as you go. |
|
Track 8) In for the Night [21 min] Getting tired of all this Japanese stuff? How about a rest? In this lesson, you learn how book the room of your choice. And you find out about words and phrases for all sorts of accommodation options in Japan, from the magnificently traditional to the unremarkably Western! |
|
Track 9) Catching a Ride [26 min] This lesson marks a chance meeting between the naive Western tourist (played by Kenny) and a stunning Japanese fashion designer from Tokyo (played by Sayaka). You'll get a first-hand exchange that not only succeeds in breaking the ice, but also a shared taxi fare to the city! In this audio lesson, you also get a gentle introduction to the three character sets that make up written Japanese: kanji, hiragana, and katakana. |
|
Track 10) Visiting History [26 min] Another great lesson for prospective tourists, in "Visiting History" we plan out a trip to an amazing temple in the historic section of the city of Nara. The temple is "big" and "famous," so we'll need to learn how to say these words along with a host of other adjectives that we'll pick up alongside our dialogue for the day. |
Track 11) Above it All (at Mt. Fuji) [27 min] This is the first lesson in the third part of the Interactive Audio Course devoted to Japanese Nightlife. It is also one of our favorite lessons, because before we hit the town we take an impromptu trip up one of the most recognizable mountains in the world - Mt. Fuji! |
|
Track 12) A Taste for Sake [31 min] This lesson marks the beginning of the end for our night time revelry. We have a quick debate about sake of the hot or cold variety, then proceed to test our preferences with several rounds of the stuff. Even if you've never tried Japanese rice wine, you'll emerge from this lesson with a mouthful of Japanese words to suit any drinking occasion. |
|
Track 13) At the Night Club [24 min] After fueling our desire to do some dancing at the sake bar, we head out to the nightclub, where Kenny proceeds to embarrass the life out of Sayaka by doing his rendition of an outdated 80's dance number. You'll gather some indispensable vocabulary from this lesson, including the verb for "to dance," the word for "free," and the word for "really" (hontō) as in, "Are you REALLY going to dance the Macarena??" |
|
Track 14) Moonlit Gardens [33 min] Easily the most romantic of the Rocket Japanese audio lessons, "Moonlit Gardens" takes Kenny and Sayaka on a stroll through a traditional Japanese garden, and you get to learn all the essential words for directions in the process. You also learn important verbs including "to know" and "to seem" during their starry-eyed journey. |
|
Track 15) It Ends with Karaoke [26 min] Despite Sayaka's total exhaustion from the day's events, Kenny and his liquid courage convince Sayaka to join him for a round of ... what else? Karaoke!!! Don't miss this lesson, which is chock full of pronunciation practice and fun! |
Track 16) To the Pharmacy [29 min] This lesson is the first in Part 4 of the course dedicated to arts and culture in Japan. Before we get cultural, however, Kenny and Sayaka discuss the prospect of taking a trip to the pharmacy for a sore stomach and head. Go figure! You'll learn the words for "this," "that," "these," and "those," and find out how to say that your head, stomach, or any part of your body is not quite right. |
|
Track 17) What are You Reading? [30 min] Manga comics are one of the great staples of Japanese popular literature, and that's why we included a whole lesson on the topic. You'll enjoy this lesson - not only do you find out how to hold another conversation in Japanese, you'll find out how to crack a few jokes as well! |
|
Track 18) Sporting Conversation (1st Half) [20 min] Talking about sports is a great way to make friends in a different country, and soccer is always a hot topic in Japan. This lesson is in two "halves": in the first half you find out about Sayaka's very own soccer playing experience. |
|
Track 19) Sporting Conversation (2nd Half) [21 min] In the second half of our sporting conversation, you find out who Sayaka's favorite player is (and the real reason she's so fond of him! Both halves of this dialogue are action-packed with common words and phrases that you can use during your day out at the game! |
|
Track 20) Kabuki Time [30 min] This final lesson in the arts and culture section is an exploration of traditional Japanese theater - kabuki. You'll find out how to say all sorts of expressions for things that you wear - that is, after we can get Kenny off the couch and out of the house. |
Track 21) At the Dinner Table [25 min] Does the prospect of having dinner at the house of a Japanese host make you a little nervous? Fear not. In this first lesson of Part 5 on "family and friends," you'll learn everything you need to know about exactly what to say before, during, and after a meal when you're the guest at a Japanese house. |
|
Track 22) Relationship Advice [29 min] In this lesson, Sayaka shows Kenny that he can lean on her, when he needs a hand - with some relationship advice in particular. Meanwhile, you learn how to ask someone for a favor in Japanese, and also some key vocabulary words when it comes to men and women. |
|
Track 23) Homesick [26 min] In this lesson poor Kenny is struck with an acute bout of homesickness but you emerge with the addition of "giving and receiving" verbs to your Japanese-speaking ability, along with some simple words that you can use to lighten the mood at just the right time! |
|
Track 24) At the Post Office [27 min] After this lesson, you'll be able to go to any post office in Japan with absolute confidence and the power to actually post something! You also get a quick culture class on bonsai trees. What's the connection between the post office and bonsai trees? Listen to this lesson and you'll find out. |
Track 25) Ultra-Formal Introductions [22 min] Part 6 of the Rocket Japanese Interactive Audio Course is designed to be a self-contained series of lessons on how to communicate in a Japanese business environment. But even if you're not traveling to Japan on business, you'll still find these lessons incredibly useful as an introduction to the most formal level of Japanese address, or keigo. The purpose of these few lessons is to teach you ultra-formal Japanese conversations. But that doesn't mean that the lessons themselves are ultra-serious! In fact, we have staged a series of business exchanges between a chief executive of Ford Motor Company (played by Kenny) and a chief executive of Toyota (played by Sayaka)! So… please accept our formal invitation to learn formal Japanese (Dōzo, yoroshiku onegai itashi masu). |
|
Track 26) Gift Giving [30 min] In this lesson you'll see first hand how to properly give and receive gifts in Japanese culture and exactly what to say during the exchange - even when that involves giving an American truck to the CEO of a Japanese car company! |
|
Track 27) Company Call [33 min] In this lesson, we simulate a full phone conversation in which Mr. Kenny Squire of Ford is trying to set up a very important meeting with Ms. Sayaka Matsuura of Toyota - I wonder what it could possibly be about... |
|
Track 28) Confirming the Meeting [28 min] In this lesson, the meeting is confirmed, and super formal compliments fly from all angles. After this lesson, you'll definitely be ready to get down to business! |
|
Track 29) Farewell (Kanpai)! [27 min] Despite this being the sad goodbye lesson from Rocket Japanese, this track is without a doubt the most special in the course. Not only do you learn the perfect way to bid farewell in Japanese, you also get a wonderful surprise that we can tell you involves a classic Japanese song, someone named Sayaka, and a six-string guitar… |
|
Track 31) Rocket Review Track [25 min] As we're fond of saying here at Rocket Languages, you often have to go back to go forward. So whenever you're ready to go back to review the words and phrases you learned in each of the audio lessons, we've compiled all of the Rocket Review into one tidy track! Enjoy it!! |
|
Click on the play button to hear the audio. |
Along with each audio track you get the full transcript of the conversation in Japanese, followed by the translation in English.
| Kenny: | Ii kangae ga arimasu! |
| Sayaka: | Nan desu ka? |
| Kenny: | Fuji-san ni nobori masen ka? |

| Sayaka: | What’s that? |
| Kenny: | Won’t you climb [go] up Mt.Fuji? |
| Sayaka: | Sounds good! Are we climbing [going] up by car or walking up? |
| Kenny: | You can climb [go] up the mountain by car? |
| Sayaka: | Yes. There is a road half way up. |
| Kenny: | Is it fun to climb [go] up by car? |
| Sayaka: | Easier than walking that’s for sure! |

|
...I have to admit that with so much on offer on the internet I was sceptical at first. I tend to like learning something formally and so I though the style offered... would not suit me. I was so wrong! The lessons are so informal and relaxed that it is easy to pick up one or two words quickly and within a few weeks you realise that you are starting to understand the structure of the sentence...... The language games are cool too! I now can quickly get the general understanding of what people are saying... I really didn't think that it would happen so quickly. |
||
...it offers so many ways to learn and it has a great online support. I am very happy that I went with the online option, because I could pick it up and put it down in my own time and not feel as though I was falling behind. Once, years ago, I joined a group [to learn a second language]... but felt as though I was the worst and slowest so I missed a session; well that was it then. I never went back and kissed goodbye to about $150. The experience stopped me from believing that I could learn another language. ...I now have another few hundred million people on the planet that I feel confident to converse with and that is an amazing gift. Expect to learn quickly and without the stress of failure... Mark Waddell AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND |

Just select “GO!” to get started. You will be shown a hiragana character and 4 multiple-choice options for the corresponding sound (written in rōmaji). When you click the correct answer the audio for that character will be played.
By the time you complete the Rocket Japanese Interactive Audio Course, MegaVocab, and MegaAudio... MegaHiragana will be the icing on the cake...
|
...Once you have registered you have 24/7 access to all the interactive audio and written sections, these are also available for download which is great as you can pop them on to a MP3 player and learn on the move. With 2 children it is not always easy to find the time to learn... ...you can simply play the last audio course to refresh your memory and off you go again. It has helped us a great deal already in from ordering in Restaurants, directions to local amenities and general chit chat... |

Common Question: What is the difference
between the $99.95 download version and the $299.95 hardcopy version?
Answer: Both versions are identical
in terms of content. The difference is in (1) how you will receive Rocket
Japanese, and (2) audio quality. If you purchase the Download Version,
you will receive instant access to the online Members Area, where you
can download the complete Rocket Japanese package or individual components
as needed.
If, on the other hand, you order the Hardcopy Version, we
will mail Rocket Japanese to you as a 20-CD set within 10-15 working
days. You will be able to pop any of the audio CDs into your regular
CD player and listen to the Audio Course. Because
the audio will be uncompressed, you'll receive enhanced sound quality compared to the
compressed audio available in the Download Version. You'll also receive CDs containing
all of the MegaJapanese software-based learning games.
We are really looking forward to getting an email from you, telling us about your experience with the course. Even though we get lots of email, we are always glad to get constructive feedback on Rocket Japanese so that we can make the learning experience even better for you!
Sincerely, |
